Glendale Heroes Regional Park

If your trip to Glendale involves a long flight or drive, consider spending time at Heroes Regional Park to stretch your legs. The park has many attractions, including a splash pad, playgrounds, volleyball courts, a skate park, and an archery range.

Playgrounds

Glendale Heroes Regional Park offers a multitude of playgrounds designed to support play for all ages and abilities. The park also features a food truck area, basketball courts and volleyball courts, a lake, an archery range, and more. Additionally, the park has ten spacious group ramadas that can accommodate a maximum of 72 people.

Another popular attraction is the Elise McCarthy Sensory Garden, which is designed to stimulate the senses of sight, some!ll and touch. The garden also includes interactive artwork and features a number of educational exhibits for visitors to explore.

The park's newest addition is the Heroes Library, which opened in May of 2019. The 7,515-square-foot building features separate outdoor Youth, Teen, and Adult Patios, Wi-Fi hotspots, Backpacks, Launchpads, Culture Passes, and more.

Archery Range

A new archery range is available at Heroes Regional Park. Visitors can enjoy the sport at a dedicated facility with 16 lanes for amateur and professional shooters. This is a great way to get outdoors and have fun with family and friends.

The Xeriscape Demonstration Garden offers free tours to learn about low-water-use plants and landscape techniques. The garden’s habitat garden demonstrates the native Sonoran Desert environment while the cactus garden showcases more than 250 species of cacti and succulents. The Elise McCarthy Sensory Garden is another popular attraction and was designed to stimulate sight, smell, and touch.

Located on the corner of Bethany Home Road and 83rd Avenue, the Heroes Park Lake is the city’s second urban fishing lake. It is stocked by AZGFD with catfish in the spring and fall and trout a few times in the winter.

This park also features a splash pad, volleyball, and basketball courts, playground areas, and group ramadas. The lake, which is the result of a longtime goal by Yucca District Councilmember Joyce Clark, joins the already existing one at Bonsall Park. Here is another spot to visit.

Lake

After a lot of anticipation, the city’s newest lake at Heroes Regional Park is now open. Visitors can catch bluegill, sunfish, and catfish stocked with rainbow trout in the winter and enjoy fishing piers, ramadas, and walking paths around the four-acre lake located at 83rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road.

Visitors can also explore the Historic Sahuaro Ranch Park, which features a variety of historic ranch buildings, or picnic near playgrounds, volleyball courts, and a large complex of nine covered ramadas. The Xeriscape Demonstration Garden is another popular destination and features a wide range of drought-tolerant plants.

There are many other fun activities and attractions at Glendale Heroes Regional Park, including a skateboard facility, basketball courts, soccer fields, and an archery range. Be sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen, especially in the summer months when the heat can be extreme. A good pair of sunglasses and a hat is also recommended for outdoor explorations.

Glendale Memorial Park Cemetery

A new lake is now available at the Glendale Memorial Park Cemetery located at 83rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road. The 4-acre lake is 13 feet deep and has ramadas and walking paths. The lake is stocked with bluegill and sunfish during warmer weather, and rainbow trout are stocked in the winter. The park also features a waterscape fountain with lights that change colors.

The historic cemetery has a rubble-stone wall and a superintendent’s lodge, both built-in 1875. Its eastern gates are flanked by limestone posts. The gatehouse is topped by a mansard roof.

Notable people buried in the cemetery include former mayors, educators, various business pioneers, and settlers whose houses are listed on the city’s historical list. It also includes a member of the Woodmen of the World, a Medal of Honor recipient, and 16 Mexican Nationals who died in a bus crash in 1959. A memorial to them is situated nearby.
