Why Pool Deck Cleaning Is Important

Your pool deck should be cleaned multiple times a year to remove debris and keep the surface free of mildew growth. Regular cleaning will also help you identify and address cracks, chips, and other damage before they get worse.

A basic pool deck cleaning routine includes sweeping with a push broom and using a garden hose to rinse off the concrete surface. Next, a chlorine solution can be applied and scrubbed into the surface. See our home page.

Debris Removal

Dirt, leaves, twigs, dust, and other debris can easily become ground into concrete or stone pool deck surfaces, causing surface damage and physical deterioration. It’s important to regularly rake and sweep your home’s outdoor pool deck.

It’s also a good idea to sweep the surface before you use a cleaning solution, to make sure that the dirt is loose and ready for washing away. For concrete and other similar materials, a clean outdoor scrub brush is usually the best tool for the job (string mops are ineffective, and indoor brooms might simply spread the dirt around).

Start by mixing a solution of standard household bleach and water in a large bucket. Mix in a squirt of soap (choose one that doesn’t contain skin lotions or other added ingredients). Dip your mop or scrubbing brush into the solution, and then scour your concrete pool deck. Be sure to rinse the area thoroughly with your garden hose.

Stains

A clean pool deck provides a safe surface underfoot and adds to the overall look of the property. It also helps prevent slips and falls that can cause injury to someone using the patio. Keeping up with regular cleaning removes slippery algae and mold residue, as well as bothersome odors.

Typically, wood and concrete decks need cleaning every other year. They may need cleaning more frequently if they get a lot of dirt tracked in from the yard or if the surrounding trees drop debris on them.

When a deck gets particularly dirty, a pristine outdoor scrub brush and a broom can be used to remove stubborn debris. If stains persist, oxygenated bleach or a diluted vinegar solution can be used to kill algae, mildew, and moss. If a deck is covered in hard water scale, you can use a trisodium phosphate (TSP) solution that can be bought at most home improvement or janitorial supply stores.

Sealing

Sealing a pool deck is an important step in preserving its beauty and durability. It also helps to prevent slip and fall accidents on the wet concrete surface. There are many different kinds of concrete sealers available, and choosing the right one depends on your needs. If you choose an acrylic sealer, you should add a non-slip additive to it to make your deck more slip-resistant. This is especially important if your deck is in a high-traffic area where people are likely to walk.

A pool deck should be sealed every two to five years. Regular sweeping and occasional power-washing will help extend the time between sealings. A professional contractor should be used to repair major cracks, chips, and other damage to concrete surfaces. For paver decks, it may be necessary to reseal periodically to remove naturally occurring white, dusty-looking build-up known as efflorescence. It is recommended that you choose a penetrating sealer, which is effective on both absorbent and non-absorbent substrates.

Repairing

Concrete is one of the most common materials used in pool deck designs. It’s durable and slip-resistant, but it needs regular cleaning to prevent stains from developing.

To clean a concrete pool deck, you’ll need to use a pressure washer with a minimum of 2,000 psi and detergent or cleaner specially formulated for the surface. A pressure washer with an adjustable nozzle allows you to control the force of water spray, so you can carefully scrub the deck without damaging it.

Once you’ve rinsed away the cleaning solution with a garden hose, it’s time to seal your concrete pool deck. Choose from penetrating or acrylic sealers that are compatible with your surface. The right sealant will help to protect the deck, making it more resistant to stains and easy to clean in the future. It will also provide additional safety by making the surface more slip-resistant. If you have concrete cracks, a vinyl patch mix is suitable for filling them up to 1/8 of an inch wide. You can also have custom scorelines or a pattern engraved into the concrete to give your deck a stylish makeover. Next blog post.
