The state of Arizona has a long and rich history. In 1539, the Spanish explorer Francisco Vázquez de Coronado became the first European to set foot in what is now Arizona. The region later became part of Mexico, and then was ceded to the United States after the Mexican-American War in 1848. Arizona was admitted as a state in 1912.
